Community Partners

WVATS subcontracts with non profit consumer or community groups in West Virginia that wish to provide services to individuals who need to acquire assistive technology devices and services in the areas of:

  1. Assistive technology device recycling projects. The project must collaborate with the WVATS Recycling Bulletin Board.
  2. Assistive technology loan libraries. The project must collaborate with the WVATS Virtual Loan Library.
  3. Assistive technology vendor device demonstration programs for individuals with disabilities and other underserved populations

Funds are available annually through a request for proposal issued in June and due in August with a start date of October.

WVATS RFP Recipients 2007-2008

Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living (NWVCIL)

NWVCIL received funding to provide device demonstrations and loans to consumers, families and professionals and to maintain an assistive technology recycling center operating from its Elkins office site.

Other services provided by NWVCIL include: Intake/assessment, advocacy, independent skills training, peer and support counseling along with benefit assistance, information and referral, awareness training, resource library, technical assistance workshops and presentations.

The Seeing Hand Association, Inc.

The Seeing Hand Association received funding to provide device demonstrations and loans to consumers who are blind or have low vision.

Other vision rehabilitation services include: Career and Vocational, Personal Adjustment (Orientation & Mobility Instruction, Support Groups), Computer Instruction, Braille Instruction, Access Technology, Low Vision Clinic, Low Vision Products, Youth Camp, and Recreation Services. All services are designed to enhance personal growth, self-sufficiency, confidence and independence of individuals who are visually impaired of all ages. All services are planned and supervised by an individual with a master’s in rehabilitation counseling.

The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley

The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley implements TechLink, a project designed to link individuals with disabilities or problems conducting activities of daily living to assistive technology. TechLink was awarded monies to provide device demonstrations and loans and to maintain an assistive technology recycling center.

Family Resource Network (FRN) – Doddridge County

The Doddridge County FRN was awarded monies to provide educational software and laptops available to children and families. The FRN will be providing demonstrations of this equipment plus loaning it out for families to try.
