Positive Behavior Support Project Activities
The Positive Behavior Support Project has five main activities: Training, Service, Consultation, Teamwork, and Mediation.
Training
The Positive Behavior Support project provides training in positive behavior support, futures planning and other issues related to developmental disabilities and team building.
Consultation
The PBS project provides technical assistance to interdisciplinary teams interested in supporting participants in achieving their goals. Often these participants have challenging behaviors that keep them from attaining their goals. Through the consultation process, the team develops effective and practical support plans and makes other environmental adjustments. The goal is to empower teams to develop supports that will have a positive and meaningful impact on participants' lives.
Teamwork
The PBS project assists with team building through Person-Centered Futures Planning. This type of planning helps participants develop their own goals. Futures plans are usually done with visual aids and illustrations which help everyone to be involved. Individuals on the team, including the participant, are responsible for the action steps developed in the Futures Planning process.
Mediation
At times there may be disagreements between parties who are supporting a participant. In these cases, the Positive Behavior Support project staff may provide mediation. Mediation may be successful if all parties involved are committed to working on a solution and if there is willingness to compromise. Since mediators must maintain a neutral position, mediations are performed when the Positive Behavior Support staff is not providing other services for the team. All mediations are coordinated through the Bureau for Behavioral Health and Health Facilities.
