- Taking Charge - Activating Senior Networks in Rural Appalachia has received funding for the 2008-2009 fiscal year from the US Department of Argriculture. This program will activate networks in 17 rural Appalachian counties to educate and empower West Virginia seniors to self-manage chronic conditions, improve healthy lifestyles and enhance their independence. In addition, home assessments and assistive technology will assist seniors in making informed choices about remaining independently in their homes.
For more information contact Tammy Hare, Rural Outreach Coordinator at 304-293- 4692 ext 1185 or takingcharge@hsc.wvu.edu. - Green Thumbs was awarded another year of funding from the Osteoporosis and Arthritis Program, WVDHHR Bureau for Public Health. This program will continue to conduct outreach to raise awareness about the wide variety of ergonomic tools and gardening accessibility options available to persons with musculoskeletal conditions.
The Green Thumbs program will provide accessible gardening grants that will support eligible applicant groups to purchase materials to construct raised beds or otherwise modify gardens for greater accessibility. Such gardens may be at senior centers, public libraries, or other such community settings where seniors and those with arthritis can be actively engaged in the construction and maintenance.

Only select state projects were invited to participate in this meeting based on the States’ transition initiatives. The Executive Director of the Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs (ATAP) attended Jamie Hayhurst-Marshall’s CSUN presentation discussing the Cabell County Inclusion Project in WV. Based on this presentation, WVATS was asked to participate in this transition meeting.
- WVATS provided three training sessions for the Marion County Board of Education Academy Aug. 4 – 5, 2008 at East Fairmont High School. On August 11, 2008WVATS also provided training to Therapy Services staff in Morgantown, WV on assistive technology devices and services.
- WV AgrAbility is sponsoring a workshop presented by the American Chronic Pain Association on Pain Management. The workshop, “Growing Well with Pain” will be on October 16, 2008 from 1:00-3:00 at the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, West Virginia. - Mary Slabinski hosted a Taking Charge at the Minority Health Conference in Beckley, WV on August 7 – 8, 2008 and attended the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg, to host an exhibit booth for AgrAbility on August 12 – 13, 2008.
- Victoria Robinson, a Secretary at the CED Big Chimney office, was awarded the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) rating from the International Association of Administrative Professionals. This rating is achieved by meeting specific education and secretarial experience and by passing the CPS examination.
- The CED welcomes Ellie McCartney and Theresa Hedrick, new Positive Behavior Support staff.
Ellie McCartney, a new Autism Specialist will cover northern West Virginia working with individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and training staff at behavioral health centers. Ellie has a master’s degree from West Virginia University in psychology with an emphasis in behavior analysis and is completing supervision for a psychology licensure. Prior to the CED, Ellie worked as a Supervised Psychologist at Valley HealthCare System. Theresa Hedrick, a new Child Specialist will cover northern West Virginia working primarily with children in the foster care system and transitioning children from out of state to in state services. Theresa has a master’s degree from West Virginia University in psychology with an emphasis in behavior analysis and worked at Valley HealthCare System as a Chemical Dependency Therapist.
