- The CED is partnering with the West Virginia University Extension Service and Community Living Initiatives Corporation (CLIC) on a new program, “Taking Charge of Your Health and Safety” funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Health Program. The program is developing and delivering health promotion materials with the aim of motivating rural seniors to take responsibility for their health and wellness so that they can remain independent as they age. A Taking Charge packet will be available for seniors in Boone, Berkeley, Cabell, Hardy, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Monongalia, Taylor and Wirt, and senior peer health educators will be recruited in these counties to conduct healthy aging workshops and presentations.
In addition, CLIC will recruit fifty low income seniors in Braxton, Greenbrier, Marion, Marshall, McDowell and Summers counties. Trained home assessment teams will provide these eligible individuals with individualized safety recommendations, assistive technology, and training in necessary environmental modifications.
